An overview of our various ministries

St. Thomas is a church on a mission to love God and people, and we do this through a number of different ministries.  If you would like to get involved in any of these ministries, or propose one we haven't thought of yet, please contact us.

sacraments

We are a sacramental church, which at its root means we believe that God is revealed through the physical world, such as when God took on human flesh in Jesus Christ.  As such, we believe that the physical world can be a means of receiving God's grace.  Human life is especially sacred to us and traditionally we practice seven liturgical rites, commonly called sacraments, marking different significant events in human lives and the grace God provides us at that moment.  These are: Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Reconciliation, Confirmation, Matrimony, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick.  Please contact the church office for more information on our sacramental ministries.

young people

Our young people are close to our heart at St Thomas. We try to provide many different opportunities for children, youth, young adults, and young families to grow in the relationships with God and other people. Some of our ministries devoted to young people include our Sunday school, our youth group, diocesan youth and family camps, mentorship and spiritual direction. For young families, we try to make child care available whenever possible. An area in the sanctuary, set aside for young children and their caregivers, is equipped with a train table, books, and an ever-evolving rotation of crafts and activities to keep our youngest family members occupied. If you need a change of scenery for your young one, a nursery space is available downstairs and has a live audio/video feed of the service. At the 9:00 a.m. service, we offer two Sunday Schools, one for school-aged children to explore Bible stories and learn about God, and the other where toddlers and preschoolers explore our faith with lively songs, activities, stories, and sensory activities. The best way to stay up-to-date on our opportunities for young people is to "like" our facebook pages, accessible through the button at the left of your screen, or to email the church office and ask to be added to our email list.

education

St Thomas is a people of faith seeking understanding.  As such, we provide a number of opportunities for Christian education and encourage people to use their education and gifts of teaching in the service of others.  Currently, we host a regular Christian education evening most Wednesdays at 7pm (check the calendar for more details) and we offer adult small groups and study series.  These provide opportunites to wrestle with big questions of faith and life, and to learn and grow. We are also involved in a variety of diocesan programs, such as Marriage Encounter, Cursillo, and Education for Ministry.  Please contact the church office for more information on our Christian education ministries, or see the events listing on the homepage of this site for current offerings. Feel free to contact one of our clergy with your impossible questions! :)

outreach

We strive to make God's mission in the world our mission, as well. Our Refugee Committee is actively sponsoring and supporting several families of refugees as they make their way to Canada and settle into their new lives here. We reach out with God's love through various forms of evangelism and social justice, such as Blankets for Canada, Foster Parents' Plan, the Common Ground Cafe, the Robin Hood Society, the Primate's World Relief and Develoment Fund, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Many of our parishioners have been on short-term missions to places like Ghana, Jordan, the Carribean, and northern Canada, after which they often make a public presentation on their trip to the congregation.  Contact the church office for upcoming opportunities or check our newsletters and bulletin announcements.

fellowship

We love to have fun together as a church family and have many opportunities to do so. We stay for coffee and goodies after worship. We get together and play crib, golf and laser tag. We learn to knit and paint. We read books and talk about them. We go on social outings. We bring in musicians for shows and host piano recitals. We have potlucks and pancake suppers and go out for breakfast, lunch and dinner (usually not on the same day).  We are a social bunch, and there's always room for more!  Our weekly service announcements and bulletin are the best sources of information about our social opportunities.

worship

We have a heart for worship.  We also love diversity.  Put those together and we have four distinctly different styles of worship services and many ways to get involved in the liturgy (which in the original Greek means literally, "the work of the people").  Our worship involves pray-ers, readers, speakers, singers, musicians, dancers, drama, altar guild, choir members, sound technicians, experimental thinkers, traditional liturgists, and everyone with a desire to offer their worship to God.  Contact the church office for more information and to find out about getting involved in our worship life together.
